MileagePlus Upgrade Awards terms and conditions
- MileagePlus Upgrade Awards are dependent on demand for paid fares and may not always be available.
- Upgrade inventory may not be available until closer to your flight date and may only
be requested once your ticket has been issued.
- If upgrade inventory is not available on your ticketed flight, the wait list will be processed based on elite status, booking code and time of request, in order.
- MileagePlus Upgrade Awards are valid only on flights operated by United / United Express and marketed as United / United Express. Codeshare flights are not eligible.
- Miles required and co-pay vary depending on origin, the destination and the booking code. All upgrades are one-way.
- Miles are deducted from the MileagePlus account at time of upgrade request.
- The actual co-pay charge will be based on flight segments that were successfully upgraded and may be lower than the amount displayed in the MileagePlus Upgrade Awards with co-pay chart.
- United will collect your credit card payment information at time of check-in.
- The co-pay amount quoted at time of check-in reflects the maximum possible charge if all segments are successfully upgraded. The actual charge may be lower than the amount quoted if some flight segments are not successfully upgraded.
- After the departure of the last flight for your upgrade request, the actual co-pay amount will be charged to the credit card, and a receipt for the co-pay charge will be sent to the e-mail address on file. You may also access this receipt through My Itineraries on united.com.
- MileagePlus elite members are exempt from the co-pay charge for upgrade requests within the continental U.S., Alaska and Canada. Exemption validity is based on the elite status reflected in the reservation on the day of departure of the upgraded flight segments. (Upgrades on Hawaii flights are not included).
- Elite member co-pay exemption applies to all passengers in a single reservation (record locator) that have a valid MileagePlus elite account number in the reservation on day of departure. Co-pay exemption will only apply to passengers in the same reservation as the MileagePlus elite member.
